They drop in the dungeons.
Once upon a time I think they were designed to fool people into meleeing someone wearing Shaman, whom would actually have the df of say gold anyway. Shaman was a real milestone to wear in Esoma, just like Sorcery was almost a "you made it" mage armor. Actually we could do with that concept being re-used and updated :)
