Maybe a silly question but is adding upgrades to items skill based or is it just luck?

It's not a silly question .....

I expect you will get differing answers.

There are some who seem to manage it very well and others who simply do not.

There is an argument that some are skill based (almost certainly true). There is also an argument that some are NOT skill based (for instance, it was put to me that a DT could be added with zero skill).

Distinctions have been made between crafted upgrades and non-crafted upgrades (seems logical since a DT is not craftable) but some are (Like ToE) are usually crafted and fall into the category of needing skill to upgrade and, yet, they are also dropped by a boss (and stack so the Database can't know the difference).

Some people buy "fails" (to purposely fail attempts) and pay quite a high amount for them but, yet, every ounce of mathematics says it cannot work (ie. a flipped coin has no memory) and, yet, people continue to do it and some people produce massively upgraded items on a seemingly regular basis.

I have no doubt at all that there is "something" to know that is known to but a very few and which will never be made available except to close and trusted friends.

Of course, there is nothing to be gained by a GM either confirming or denying any of this as it is all part of the game.

For my part, I have tried pretty much everything I have been told and it has all turned to bollocks.

It seems implausible that logic supports it all turning to bollocks and yet, just look at the array of gear out there.

Here's a normal reply:

Non crafted upgrades do not require crafting skill to upgrade an item with, such as:
- RDT
- DT
- ToW

Crafted upgrades do require crafting skill to upgrade an item with, such as:
- ToE
- DP
- KE

Chance of success is based on crafting skill, so in theory someone with 200 armour crafting skill will have a higher success rate than someone with 100 armour crafting skill.

I assume this is the same principle for non-crafted upgrades, so someone with 0 skill still has a chance of success, but someone with 200 armour crafting skill would have a higher chance of it not failing.

Whether the upgrade is crafted or not is irrelevant. Some upgrades go to +8. These require no skill to add. Other upgrades go to +5 and the amount of skill you have affects the success rate. You need a minimum of 100 skill in one of the artisan crafts. You then aquire additional success bonuses at 150 and 200 skill.

Examples of upgrades that do not require skill are

Swift spirits
Red Dragon tablets
Tablet of wisdom
Delight tablet
Blue pills
Drugs

Examples of upgrades requiring skill enclude

Tablet of evil
Keen eye
Dragons pill
Pill of destruction
Pill of devastation

Do you know the % chance of success for "no skill" upgrades?

Does that % chance change for each addition?

With regards to skill based upgrades, do you know the % chance of success and the various tiers?

If an upgrade were to fail, do you lose both item and upgrade item?
