See alot saying to stay on dex till high dex.
My question is when I change to str weapon as this skill will be so low. Will I have to Freemode skill for ages (which I have done to 22 skill) or can I just jump in and attack with lower weapons. I do know it will take longer to kill mobs.

Skill only matters for your damage, not your gains. You would get the same stats from a training axe compared to a halberd of might, it just takes longer.
