Had the same issue myself, would be nice if it was changed to either allow longer pm's or perhaps just set a MaxLength on the textarea to avoid the error from the client side (at least in newer browsers).

Have set client side the maximum length allowed and increased maximum length of a PM to 20,000 characters (same as a forum post).
