Of course most of my time is spent at work which then is driven by money... but you get the point.

I believe you should go totally for totally new to soma to prevent the issues you mention. Im sure some programmer would issue a quote. Im not skilled at all when it comes to database size, but I would assume the soma db is pretty old skool. So maybe easily understood?
"GHOSTLORD" Receiving donations to pay an independent individuals time, 1day, would be a step in the right direction, and would answer many of the questions above.

If no -
How long would it take to learn and understand the game mechanics?
How long would it take for him to learn how the database was constructed and reconstructed at least once or twice?
How easy is it to work with the systems in place, if you don't know them?

"CAPPILIO""ISYLVER"I appreciate the thread. However neither myself or Finito or driven by money. It's purely time based. Yeah this is partly why i suggested the change for specific spawn drop files as you may not know that the north wraiths in vod have half of the other drops such as the tab of wis, drawing tab, sapphires etc and the pit has the lvl 3 items, staves 63str legs etc.

#3 and #8 are probably the most important,
#3- ide say 90% of items atm are traded for frogs etc, would be good to see some sort of bar sink, as barr atm is kinda redundant, maybe bring back auction house or something #8 - this one is probably the most important, such a massive part of esoma, to catch someone with a weaken,db,4th all in one sequence was the dogs nuts, atm by time u have weakend and jumped a space to cancel second weaken, then cast db, u might aswell of not botherd, maybe some sort of toggle, so if u know ur going to pk/wotw, you can /toggleclicker on or /toggleclicker off etc, just an idea but yeh server is great and the gms have done wonders, not just bringing back soma , which we all played so long ago and bringing back childhood memories, but for the dedication, that is all x

Good thread, even though I don't play much I'd donate if we did set this up. Also agree iSylv and Finito have both done a cracking job thus far. In a way this thread shows how highly people think of the work they've done as people are enjoying having Soma back so much they're willing to put their cash into it to keep it growing and improving.

I like the idea of hiring someone, provided they are neutral.
Of course the ideal would be if one of the GMs were in a position to work less hours, or go part time if enough donations came in... but most jobs do not provide that kind of flexibility, and they might not want to anyway. I would love us to pay a GM to work on soma full time, but as much as I'd pay my share, I think that is most certainly an unrealistic goal. And without job security, it might be a foolish move on their part even if it was realistic. All of this is dependent on circumstances, but the circumstances where that could work are unlikely. So yes, hiring someone would be nice. Neutral for sure, or some other safeguards in place. But if this is going to be practical, there should be a way of paying a monthly fee. I'd rather do that than just give a chunk of change. And it's a more reliable revenue stream from the GMs point of view too.

"IMCON"I like the idea of hiring someone, provided they are neutral. I don't agree with paying a monthly fee, the whole point of this would be a one off to do a large overhaul of certain things that are needed. Say again when the caps are raised and new armours, weapons, monsters and maybe maps become available. It's just to speed things up to keep up with the server

I guess that's two different things. A one off vs someone working part time on this. A one-off, I agree that single donation would be the goal. But I can't help but feel that there are many more ideas to add to your list above, and that one-off might not be so one-off. I would love to have someone consistently able to work on changes and new content.

I agree, in the short term though it would be ideal to get a fair amount of things sorted that should have been done a while ago rather than letting them carry on any longer

Please do think about my idea, I love this game, server and all the work you've done as does everyone else who is playing this server. Now and again it will require a large amount of work which is impossible for you alone, everyone has to have a life! What if you just want to donate and don't want a scroll, or want to donate say £6 or £13?

Personally I think there are some changes that would make the game better for all. However the game in it's current state is playable by everyone and most things can be achieved (hsoma - no idea about dsoma). That is not to say that some of the linked posts couldn't do with a looking at in the mean time.
I would rather this production time/money was spent developing a big later game patch with new content/maps etc for when more people begin closing in on caps rather than sorting out d1/2/3 and vod etc. Say tale end of this year/into next? As more people begin to reach the lvl 70s you can see more people leveling on rested. From GV last night I see many players who previously posted on these forums about not being able to take part in gv turning up in bone/nm and playing a big part. The game slowdowns naturally closes the gap. (last paragraph just to say that my post was biased on my lvl=] )

Thanks for the address, though in the end I decided to buy a rainbow of shout scrolls heh. :) More options are good I guess ;p Or maybe they can be given away as guild event prizes. Plus, I figured it would be easier to deliver five shout scrolls to the same person at once than individually.
