Its a very fair point, the NSA/GHCQ wouldn't want to look at anything a regular person was doing, but that doesn't elevate worry that said powers would never be misused, or abused? I don't buy the "but its government they don't lie and everything they do is in the country s best interest" why that maybe the overall goal individuals within these organisation have and do abuse powers only need to look at the pleb-gate incident . While that was the MET and not GHCQ these people were still in positions of "Trust" and i think its pretty safe to assume if it goes wrong here, it can go wrong elsewhere.

At the moment the majority of this is meant to be used to fight terror etc, something which nobody can complain about. It keeps us all safe.

But look into the future here's an interesting article:

If i didn't vote this government in power, Should they be able to walk in and out of my home (virtually) without oversight or warrant. Lets not forget In the UK these practices were hidden from the Cabinet, the National Security Council and the Communications Data Bill Committee, killing any democratic debate in the first place.

regardless of me being a terrorist or not, I expect to be living in a democratic society and the fact that my privacy may be intruded on without due process is a scary thought.

I take it very simple, it's out of my hands, it doesn't effects me directly, so I don't have to care. It's not a good thing at all and I'm not proud of it but it allows me to live a happy life.

Sometimes I feel like people take the government as something non-human better than us. But we should remember they are just people too and just like us their idiots. Greedy idiots to boot.

Compared to so many other countries we can (nearly) say what we want, we can oppose leaders and challenge them. A single civilian can step up and aim for power to make things better.

Anyway what I know about the topic is rather shallow and so is my opinion, simply because I don't care enough. :D

*ps*
I don't really know how far the Netherlands goes in this. But as a Dutchman I know that one day it could be enough, and when it's enough, any organisation / country can go screw itself:P

Can I read all of your sensitive information please? (Polite question, I'll read it anyway.)
If you've nothing to hide, you've no need to worry about disclosing everything about your daily life to me!
I promise that I won't abuse the incredible wealth of information, misconstrue, misinterpret or change the context of your message to suit an agenda!
I'm the government (well, a private contract to the government) to keep you all safe and secure, never have I done anything that would mislead you - oh so law abiding citizens!
My word is truth and I never have or will ever lie to you.

Joke aside...

Considering politicians (whom abuse the information services) are legally able to lie through the teeth to their own citizens on issues that aren't confidential makes me lose ALL trust and credibility in what they SAY they use the information for.

Don't have to be someone who believes the palatable or bizarre conspiracy theories to see that most western world (well, most in general) governments are here to serve their own agendas and not to do what they should be doing... SERVING THE PEOPLE, seeing as, you know, they are public servants.

The ability to extradite, arrest and detain people without the need for a warrant or reason in recent years is cause for concern in itself, let alone the quantity of information the information services (private, mind you) have access to.

I have nothing to worry about as I've never (and will never) do anything to cause concern, but that is beside the point. NOBODY should have access to such information.

I feel just as safe today as I did 20 years ago.

This will sound like a complete lie and I wouldn't expect you to believe me, however....

As someone who has, in very truthful words had one of the most powerful men/companies in the world track me down and try to rip my online income and even my life to shreds I can honestly say that the full extent the data available to governments and companies like this is immense. They were trying to "break my spirit" apparently.

You need to begin taking your own personal security and anonymity online very seriously. Ensure your email is as secure as possible, host it on your own domain so you control it, use browser which block tracking, get yourself a VPS.

As Ghostlord said, don't be interesting, why hide if you've got nothing to hide? Well because it is objective, what is interesting to these people often changes and when the time comes, they will use it against you. This could include "crimes" you've not yet committed. Take a look at the Ukraine right now. http://www.reddit.com/r/worldnews/comments/1vtpa8/dear_subscriber_you_are_registered_as_a/
