In depth guide to editing in game BMP's

As there seems to be a lot of interest surrounding editing of in game BMP's, here is a guide outlining each step required to edit any item in the game.

What you need:

A program that can edit BMP format, I personally use Photoshop, but anything that is capable of doing so is fine.

The conversion files:

http://s000.tinyupload.com/?file_id=00017491389716419073

Modelling software can help speed up the process but is not necessary.

Getting started:

Download the MassSomaConverter and place in an easy to access location.

Drag the converter and the setting file into C:\Myth of Soma\Armature

Open the settings file, and where I have SPL, put BMP, save then close the file.

Run the converter and all items in the game will have multiple BMP's produce

Look for the item you want to edit, it will have several SPL files, each item is broken into fixed stance BMP's, walking BMP's and attack BMP's.

For the purposes of this guide I will choose The Crusher:

As you can see there are many BMP's.

The start of each BMP cycle is marked by the files you see with the internet explorer icon in the image, they are SPL's.

Select the SPL immediately prior to the first BMP you want to edit and select every single BMP up to but not including the next SPL file, grab every single one.

Cut and paste them into a new file relevantly named:

There are typically 4 BMP's per animation cycle, for example standing still facing right will have 4 BMP's that the game cycles through to create the in game animation, I recommend just simply working your way through all BMP's from the first to the last.

Each BMP also has a notepad placement file, more on that later.

Open the desired BMP's in Photoshop or an alternative software:

Zoom in to the BMP until you can easily work on a single pixel basis.

I use the pencil tool to select individual pixels and colour as required.

If a certain colour tone is desired, a BMP with required colour can be opened up, select a portion that you like and copy into the window as shown:

The go mad with your first design, after all, the first few attempts will be trial and error:

There are 3 very important rules:

1) Identify where the character will be and do not draw over that area.

2) Do not draw over the gap on the handle, making sure your design lines up with this to ensure perfect placement.

3) Everything but the weapon must be returned to pink when finished.

Save all the BMP's as BMP format and nothing else, into the file you created before with all the BMP's and the SPL file.

Save the BMP's as the original name, not as copies, accept the overwrite.

Copy the converter and the setting file into the folder.

Edit the settings file to read SPL instead of BMP.

Create a file called placements in the same folder as all the BMP's - VERY IMPORTANT.

Place all the notepad files in the folder that correspond to all the BMP's into the placements folder - Ensuring not to move the converters settings file.

Run the converter.

A new SPL simply named SOMA will be created.

Move it to another location and rename it to the exact same name as the SPL you cut out of Armature before, in this case A506200.

Drop the SPL into C:\Myth of Soma\Armature.

Run the Myth of Soma and see you handiwork =]

Congratulations you have just edited an items appearance =]

I won't lie it is a time consuming process, but there you have it!

Many thanks,

Chojine.
