Would this allow for things like hero that is untradable to be upgraded by a crafter too?

It should do cause your not actually trading it your just placing the item in the UI screen for the crafter to press the appropriate button to either make upgrades at oven or pot table or attempting an upgrade at anvil.
Just like the special repair UI your not trading the item just placing it in the box.
