What's everyone's opinions on this?

It is best to be a battle mage or pure str or pure int.

Does one greatly outplay the other in pvp and wotw?

It’s tides of the times imo, a lot of people went 50+ pure dex now a lot are going pure str and int. what ever class you go there will be a counter class. People will log what ever class depending on the fight.
