My two pennies worth.
I returned to this game after 16 years off around 2-3 weeks ago and I have loved every second. I have loved the community, I loved the support and fun of this amazing server. I do not know anything at all on the code or setup of servers. What I would say is I expected @isylver or @finito to come online within those three weeks. To show support to the community they have clearly built so well. But I am sure they have work and their own families to deal with ha. We need that excitement continued and fresh new content, events and interaction from the game masters. If we need to explore funding or supporting this, I would.

"FOXTRCK"if you want more, go out and setup your own free website forum and build a community. It’s out there for the taking and always was. I’d just echo this. Fin and I ran somadev for years before we decided to setup a server (remember this launched In 2013) and that was purely due to a lack of stability in servers which led to security issues, and many reasons listed in the thread above. I’m not one to stand in the way of progressing the game and would encourage people to keep experimenting and pushing things forward. However, this development community is open for anyone to take. We keep somadev.com purely for data/guides archived reasons nothing more. Heck we barely have time for this server like we used to so certainly won’t have time to run a development forum 😅

what do you want them to do? it is a very old game. it is always possible to develop it into a real cult thing and promote it but while the current devs have been decent enough theyve never focused on the game entirely as a long term project i think or they dont feel the need to.
thats ok, more power to them they made a decision but these days there are genuine opportunities for small mmos and games to get a 500 userbase or something. its just difficult though, as a dev, you know it is apossible but you dont know the path.

Slowly rebuilding an environment for developers with friends here: https://www.reddit.com/r/soma_space/
We have a discord, and GitHub organisation linked via Reddit I'm personally just slowly writing guides again It's happening slowly but keeping it publically available and fully documented should make development sustainable and public again even if progress is slow If you have anything soma to share we want to hear from you, we use a PR process for accepting new resources We're not sure if we have all the esoma patches at the moment, I've also heard there's a pretty recent map editor out there, also looking for anyone willing to write guides or publically contribute files, art, music, programs etc

When I next get on my computer, I first need to sort out the Halloween event then I'll look at what stuff I got that can share and release - I'll need to tidy some stuff up a little and sort out license.
I'm a software engineer too. Got way less time these days than used to though to do stuff with Soma and I get constantly distracted with doing different things with it anyway. Soma server can run on Linux and also with MySQL (did a PoC a long time ago) and would be a fun thing to finish off - might still have the VM around with the setup on it. I'll release the OpenGL client code and assets plus the reversed engineered 1p1 code that does work (was used for the old old test server) but missing a couple features, I should still have notes on what was not done/reversed (I still fix a few things on it and use it for reference instead of the assembly sometimes). Also will release the browser client, it is incomplete but has a fair bit done and w/e else I can dig out (did start a client using Godot at one point too just don't have time to work on it).

I personally think that the reason this soma server has longevity is because of the dedication and work of Finito combined with the loyal player base that simply love soma.
What is needed to keep this game alive is an expansion of the current team to trusted individuals who can carry on the legacy of strict impartiality of Finito and also be a custodian of the work he has done thus far to make soma a secure and less buggy game to play. Further development to soma is obviously welcome. But again what I believe soma needs is greater diversity of the ingame content rather than expanding the level cap or further unbalancing of the scales with the types of 'builds' for characters. Also, another controversial opinion, but I think the reason many complain about the rates being too slow or drops being too few is because of the existence of bots / pilots / hacks and the lucrative trade in items. If everyone was on an even playing field many would welcome the long grind and if the rule breaking was properly policed many would have confidence in playing the game. I personally get annoyed when people whinge about levelling being too slow etc. I also think the PK system has been made far too soft. Items are meant to be dropped. People are meant to be splattered. It's a PvP game for the most part. But yes, soma should have a future and it should be one that will suit the majority of players, provide a good challenge and allow for further progress forwards with diversity ingame.
