We are seeing both melee and mages running around in the same val armours now - an army of gold clones will soon be all-pervading. (armed either with a val bow or val orb).
Maybe time to think about new armours - where melee armours have stat requirements to preclude mages and mage robes similarly preclude melee chrs? Limit melee and mage to only adding opposition stats by upgrading their respective armours by adding def/MD and wearing appropriate accessories. Maybe allow just one item of the others armour to be worm - say chest piece?
