One of the concepts economists are familiar with is, 'Black markets'.
Essentially these are markets operating in the shadows of society, working illegally to fulfil demand of a service (Abortionists) or a product (A-class drugs). One of the solutions to eradicating these markets, is to infact legalise them, but only under controlled government law and legislation. This way the state can control the amount and, more importantly, the safety of the society they govern. The past week has highlighted a, sort of, Soma 'black market' equivalent, namely, the buying and selling of characters with Real cash, profiting from a free service. The Notion I'm forwarding, but not necessarily advocating, is to create a market place for character transfers on the forums. Like iSylver has created a 'Link item' feature already, this proposed idea would allow users to link characters they wish to sell in an auction feature here on the forums. The Stats and Warehouse would be advertised and the auction can begin. Clearly, and importantly, Gamemasters would have control directly over what chars can be verified for sale. Whatsmore, the Myth of soma would take a percentage commission from every sale that would be re-invested into the game for more content updates. The Email details, passwords, and other security information would be transferred and changed appropriately by a Gamemaster. No more of this password retrieval rubbish! Advantages so far, -Raises funds for server. -Direct control over a black market (which we've found can be disastrous to a community) -Potentially increases the usercount as those characters that may have simply been discarded and not played could have new owners who would play them. -Incentivises levelling and character build variation (int chars/mellee chars) Disadvantages, -May cause a loss of community feel, with possible user changing. -Time consuming in the short run to monitor and build -may not be needed now a new (protected) host is in the pipeline. -May create an influx of profitering, lifeless, players -May worsen the problem of botting (but may be an incentive for pkers) Give your thought below, add to the pros and cons. Be cool :)
