"QUICKSHOT"pretty sure Gorthol left long time before all the hackin went down i think he left when korea stopped supporting the game properly even before devil race patch? I think he was the only paid staff maybe the reason he left if they wasnt making enough money on the game etc and went to part time staff in the form of radiankh and slither i believe for the longest time.

I pretty sure when devils were first created they was slither and nexer his devil gm char no one else by then other than a couple of advisors.s

At that time Gorthol wasn't involved a lot with Soma. He handed off work to Radiankh, who handed off work to Slither. But Gorthol was still at GN and still had his GM accounts, and was contacted.

Philkills through his own wizardry cracked the encryption twice and we used the server to test client mods and I looked for security issues. It's a lot easier to test on an actual server than have to set up your own all the time, especially if you've only got one computer. This led to me getting banned so in the end I had to resort to that anyway.

The dream team of Shen Soma turned out to be a bit lacklustre since I think it was only Finito doing any technical activity pushing the game forward. Garry had idealistic visions of things he wanted to do, but if you ask me they never made a lot of sense when he wrote them down. There was a fourth guy called Dataforce, and maybe a couple other guys, but I'm not convinced they ever really played Soma or did anything with the project.

Other development was ongoing. Finito was using Droiyan server source code to create a Soma server emulator. I was working on a server emulator from scratch with LiquidX and another guy. In the end I don't think any of these projects got all that sophisticated, since they were massive projects.

Shen Soma eventually fell through (I think the management lost interest?) and Sylver set up Somadev. There wasn't always an official Somadev server though - it was more a place to talk about Soma and development. We saw some great servers like Remix and a lot of good development. We had a new age of development tools, with Remix creating item/mob editors, me creating a sprite viewer/editor, and Syfire creating all sorts of guides. There was even a service provided by Syfire and Remix to custom build and host people's ideal server ideas. We had people like Ramy, Tiffany and Rauban working on their own projects and providing new knowledge, but at the same time a smaller and smaller overall community.

The Somadev server eventually launched and after that I think we saw very few competitors. The community just wasn't big enough anymore to really support multiple servers. We did see drop ins from Slither and Radiankh, and old players. I wasn't involved in Soma much after I finished university so I haven't followed the Somadev server's history much, but it sounds like it's going strong.

Dont see my name or paul's name! anywhere in here :(

I remember using a flaw in the GN Gametime topup to add gametime to any acc i wanted (used to sell to phili's for barr) *(arena_jfj crew)*. Used to have a dispute with radiankh who banned me. i would then re-add game time and be back ingame. eventually deleted chars then buy 3 month on a new acc as thats all they wanted to prove ownership of acc.

alot that has been tested/fixed since launch here also.

just thought i wud post after reading as i felt i was lost in the past :D

p.s. also remember my irl m8 joe flew down to jason's (slither) to buy burnzy for munies and stayed over.

long live the kivela tattoo. <3 <3

Just watched that that soma old soma promo video and seen a developer called Hong Sang-pyo.

After a bit of digging it appears he became head of KOCCA (Korea creative contents agency)

https://www.koreatimes.co.kr/www/tech/2017/12/134_126724.html

lists one of the companies they were trying to promote as Com2us, this rang a bell as meh albeit roughly is similar to comnjoy the developers of this game.

I play Com2us games a lot one in particular Summoners War: Skyarena wonder if there is any connection as this along with Soma are 2 of the best and addictive games I've ever played.

Some of the Korean players may be able to shed some light as that name could be as common in Korean as John Smith.

Do you think there would be any way of reaching out to him and getting mob soma?:D

"ISYLVER"Yes the files were on an old Wizgate ftp which was public. MentaL from rage zone had the first server purely due to Mr Finito himself. When all of us were about to give up on getting the files working he got it sorted (possibly with help from a guy named Mman for the proxy).

As for the reason the euro server got shut down. Philkills sent out a working source to a guy named Kingkooper that realised that if you send a craft table a negative value it would give you the amount back. Hence why we saw people with 9999 delight tabs towards the end of the euro server. Slither (the euro GM) was unable to fix this as he was effectively a community mod (myself and Phil worked with him, helping him out just before the source code release).

Proteus I believe the company was called "comnjoy" if I'm not mistaken.

It's really quite amazing the fact soma has surived today and that is almost entirely due to Finitos efforts.

It's often overlooked how much people like Finito and yourself have actually contributed to Soma not only with this server but reaching far back.

Hats off to you both and all the others that have made each step possible along the way.

"MAGSTORE"I remember the abyss map . Used to do con on ghouls there afk on esoma lol they were perfect for it. Don't see why this map never got utilised on this server although I'm sure finito had his reasons.

The map used for CTF reminds me of the old Abyss map.
Not sure if it is though.
