I have tried to start a devil character but have not been able to understand what to do. It seemingly doesn't work in the same way as Humans.

For one thing, I think you have to collect things and use them to trade instead of barr.

I don't know what any of the things are or what they are for or do.

I can't find my way around.

I have no idea how to gain the various stats I might want (str/dex/int etc.) but I think it is different (certainly there is a lot of talk about "punching")

I don't know what I am supposed to do.

If I spent more time trying to understand it I would probably get my head around it. It just seems more complex than the human world.

I think that some of us find some things easier than others 8)

Basically, I am just a philistine ...

It's fairly simple, probably simpler than hsoma as you either use the weapon in your class, or you punch. It's just completely broken, unbalanced, and dead from what I've heard.

Yes lower end weaps or armours do have trade items to buy instead of Barr but all can bee gotten from sgems (higher levels tend to have them in abundance) generally I always found the people on Dsoma more than helpful, you just have to find them :p also the quests do gain you armours/weaps,
Gains are given on level up, though you can't really hunt to specific stats as you can only use one weap (the class you choose at the start) only variance is a boost with the +30/+50 bonuses (which I think are easier to do on Dsoma because of the higher defence on armours)
Other option is to punch a level which will give you high int gains alongside gains equivalent to that of sword class.(balance of dex and str) they are the only noteworthy stats.
An example is if you use main weap pure levelling or minimal punching (ignoring Mage) you will cap at about 90 ish int, if you punched the whole way (I believe you would cap with a swordy stats) and about 220ish int on top which is great for RvR but less useful against other devs although proc sets are very handy as 'intheface' can account for
As for it being dead player count, if everyone uses that as a reason not to start out then the game will forever remain that way
Hope that helps somebody get their head around it, if not rant over :)
