Why play Soma instead of newer MMORPGs?

Hey all.

Soma was the first MMORPG I ever played, and it kept me entertained (or addicted...) for several years. I didn't really bother to play any other MMORPGs after I quit Esoma, so I can't really compare Soma to other games.

Nostalgia is what made me try this server, but I didn't initially think I would actually start playing it properly again. This obviously proved to be wrong, and I have been really enjoying it so far, and I currently have no intention to stop playing. A part of me does however still think that surely the modern MMORPGs on offer must be much better games than Soma and that I would be better off trying them.

Presumably many of you have played numerous MMORPGs over the past 10 years, so that leaves me wondering; what exactly is it about Soma that makes you want to play this old game, rather than newer ones which on paper can offer so much more in every respect?

For me it's pretty simple.

Soma's very easy to pick up and play.

When I log on, I don't require to make a group to go out and do just about anything.

If I want to play solo, I can, it'll be quicker to down bosses in a group, sure, but I like being able to do things myself. Once you're reaching endgame, because it takes such a huge amount of time, you can even start challenging Guild Village by yourself.

There's also the "two games in one". I play both races and have various classes on Dsoma.

The crafting system is tedious as hell, but that's it's own "game" where it might not be 'fun' as such, but you do have a sense of achievement for getting to certain skill marks.

Soma is something I can do whilst working, whilst relaxing.

Other than doing int, it takes about 5-10% of my attention to hunt full time. Its compatible with pretty much any part of normal life - you don't even have to be sat down. I've cooked meals and worked out whilst leveling in soma :).

If it wasn't for windowed mode I wouldn't play at all. There are so many other games that are more fun to occupy your mind with, but soma doesn't occupy it.

Its the community, played wow an guild wars 2 which are obviously extremely high user count servers. You rarely see the same person twice an imo you dont interact with other people as much, even if you do for a quest or whatever it'll be just for the quest an you wont see that person again. Might as well play a console game.

Got bored of wow ages ago, gta 5 online sucked, soma was my first mmorpg so its got a special place in my heart :P

only problem is it's just too time consuming if you want to stay competitive, with the newer mmorpg's i can be casual and still compete. Soma was fine when i was young and free but now it is just a game for the unemployed and the multis.

As soon as skyrim online comes out on ps4 though bye bye soma.

I only came across the server two weeks before it was announced, now idea why I thought of soma!

The main reason I am playing it because at present there is not a MMO out there that catches my attention. I am waiting for Diablo Loot patch and the next game I will be playing will be Wild Star.

It's the only MMO for me currently and as an advisor i don't have to compete so I still get to play some Diablo III. :D

I do start to miss the fun though, but I'm always close by watching. :)

Soma was first MMORPG i played. I remember watching it on Game Network when i was like 11-12.

Ive tried many MMOs over the years, Lineage 2, LOTRO and have a ps3 and plan on buying a ps4.

Yes there are many more 'better' games out there, both online and single player.
But the thing with soma is its simplicity. Simple grind.
I didnt complete Skyrim because i got bored of the vast endless quests you could do. There was never a sense of achievement, as the more quests you did, more simply popped up lol.

Also as others have said, community. Yes we like to moan and sulk, but we know the moaners and sulkers. The small community of soma means everyone knows everyone. You see the high lvls, you see the low levels. Its not a matter of, oh ill hunt with you for 2 hours one day and the following day, that person is now on a map that takes 4 hours to run to, (literally).

I personally dont have the free time that i did as a youngster so MMOs on the whole dont really appeal to me now.

But soma is simple, and its free.
