Although I'm participating in the event by simply hunting, I don't feel like I'm in any sort of event because of that rarity, I'm shocked and reminded if I find a present. Rather than trying to actively gather gifts for Buddy to open. I cannot play anywhere near as much as most people, but over the past several days I've made a little more time to hunt (getting away from the forge). Over the course of the event, I've found just 4 small / 1 medium presents and the mobs I hunt definitely give me stats (1 small present in the past 2 days). The best part for me so far, was finding a bunch of Christmas potions dropped by other players in town, storing them and then later giving them to a new player starting out along with 50k. Would've been great to see a sharing aspect thrown into this event.
