Finding information on this game is like, sieving sawdust to find rocking horse poo. Why is there no indepth wiki about this. Heaven know's, you've had the time...
I started playing this game when I was twelve. In those days the true giants of the game Hunfu, Shakka, Wake, Sabretooth, and Jubal. It's evolved it would seem from its earnest beginnings. I certainly couldn't have levelled as quickly as I can now today. I feel almost "noobile" in this newer incarnation. My sibling had progressed quite far back then creating a Guild called the Praetorians, which some might remember. The strongest Guild then was The Titans. Then "The Fall" took place. Certain players begrudge paying the monthly fee, and by some unknown means cloned the game and gave access to a free server, much like CoX had been in more recent years, with higher drop rates. The following decade of the game was scuttled. A few Die hard players, remained while numbers dwindled in the rise of WoW.
It would be nice if "OG" players chose to recite the history of the game as it is our legacy.

Probably just worth clarifying there is a wiki and mickyC and the volunteers did a great job of setting that up.

As for the original server demise. It didn’t shut down due to people not wanting to pay the fees it was one rogue developer with a source client managed to send minus values and dupe tonnes of items which inevitably ruined the game.

Thus we decided in 2013 to keep the game alive. It’s a fair shout that the game has evolved over time particularly things like doing con when you want, bosses, gear, rested, pvp events, Dsoma etc.

Welcome back, hope you enjoy your time here.
