Staff MA bonus.

Author Content Date
Staff MA bonus does not seem comparable with melee weapons ATT bonus.

I just just tested this with iphios. The MA bonus is dependent on spell power.

With the highest power spell ingame (Dragon Breath power 36) you receive 9~9 ma bonus both naked and in full ma/int+ gear. This is the same for iphios at 196 staff skill and myself at 200 staff skill. With spirit sword level 4 power 25 I was receiving 7~7 ma bonus and with fireball level 3 power 10 I was receiving 2~2.

In short, currently there is no benefit in going past 146 staff skill as you don't receive any MA bonus unlike melee weapons.

Abit of a kick in the teeth as both iphios and myself have been alternating melee weapons so as not to lose staff yet we would have been better off just gaining melee wep skill for the added att bonus.

Could this perhaps be looked into?

MA bonus is given by staffSkill * magicPower / 800 and rounded. So with magicPower 36 and 196 staffSkill or 200 staffSkill the result will be the same as 8.82 will get rounded to 9.

ATTK bonus is given by (weaponSkill / 200) * weaponAttack.

So to have something comparable to the ATTK bonus, MA bonus could be redefined as (staffSkill / 200) * magicPower. That would then mean with magicPower 36 the outcome would be 35 for 196 staffSkill and 36 for 200 staffSkill.

ATTK bonus still has the same problem where an increase of skill does not result in any change, if the weaponAttack number is not a large number.

So changing the MA bonus to be comparable to ATTK bonus does not change anything with skill increase sometimes not changing the bonus amount depending on the magic power it just results in a 4x larger bonus.

Thanks for the reply, it makes sense now.

Is changing it from 800 to 200 so that it's comparable with melee skill something that could be considered?

The reason I ask is my example of 196 and 200 were only the figures from iphios and myself however the comparison which prompted the post was with that of 146 skill (final staff requirement). Currently, by the given calculation, you gain 2 ma from 200 skill over someone with 146, frankly not worth it. With the revised calculation of /200 instead of /800 you would gain 10 ma at 200 skill over someone with 146, that imo would be worth it.

As stated many who play the Mage role alternate melee weapons as so not to lose any staff skill as their main weapon, in doing so missing out on melee art bonus for little to no ma bonus. Changing ma/skill to scale with that of att/skill would serve as somewhat of an incentive to maintain staff as a main weapon.

Sorry for double post, I'm unable to edit my post on my phone.

If the MA increase across the board was a concern with regards to levelling speed or PvP/RvR, is there way to add bonuses at set skill? Say a bonus at 50, 100, 150, 200 or every 25 skill for example or does it have to work from a formula as staff skill*spell power/800?

Makes sense and can't say I've ever noticed ma working like that before. However I agree there should be some reason to maintain staff skill and forefit the attack you gain from a melee weap skill.
I don't accept the argument "you kept staff to make training int easier and cost less mana". I kept staff as a primary weapon which has seen me juggle melee weaps throughout the game to the stage that at still my level iv still never been competitive in melee situations. I made that choice to do so and accepted my melee att will suck until I cap (despite having more str than most). However I did that on the basis the ma bonus would be at least worth while...

Agree with Iphios and Quimm, I purposely reskilled a painful amount in order to keep staff and to see it not get the same bonus is quite strange as Quimm says there is no incentive to juggle skill or go above azure.

You get a bonus from having 100 skill in a magic school.

Don't be greedy.

I agree it's worth investigating though.

I actually ignored the comment assuming it was a troll.
What is to agree with?

I could see why he would say that. But I do think it's worth investigating if we should change MA bonus.

Wasn't a troll.

A Melee weapon has one skill factor, the skill of the weapon you are using.

Magic has two. The skill in weapon (staff) and the skill in the magic school.

Stacking together, this gives 19 on DB, and 17 on lvl 4 SS and LS?

I don't see why you are calling for more than that. Seems perfectly in line with melee skill to me.

Then in the most politest of terms - you don't have a clue what you are on about and should probably consider logging off never to return.
Also not a troll.

The last thing the game needs is for mages to have more MA.

Please keep you opinions out of this thread, you're missing the point entirely. Finito has posted and I look forward to an update from him answering the questions asked.

Not exactly a bug is it? Should have gone in the ideas section. Like you say it's been like this for ten years, why change now?
