"FLOOD"thats such a poor response dude come on. @QUASIMODO

im not asking for it to be changed so youre are at a disadvantage, im asking for it to be balanced. a mage vs warrior, both should be able to kill each other, not just one way.

Everything Quasi said is true, and it most certainly does go both ways.

na its not, completely missing the point of what i said. just the type of attitudes thats shitted this game up

Ironic.

Introduce range mellee at mags then tell mages they need dex to hunt them and wait for the reaction

End of the day a warrior has to level 3 stats (to be viable) a mage has to level 2, this is where the gap comes from

Hello Flood,

I wanted to reply to you specifically as I know you and think you are PvE.

We all gotta accept that this server is for cheap thrills and has been for awhile. Thats why you have the FPS gamer attitude of "git gud". The game is other wise so much more than this.

For instance.

Finito has a fixed up map editing tool. It isn't a quick process unless you really put some time into understanding how the game world is rendered where you'll hit wall after wall. Once you crack it, you know it though.. Out of the dozen people that I know have the tool (even people from sd dev days that I thought would jump at the chance, didnt), I only know two people that put some effort into learning it in depth and as such I've passed on most / all my knowledge and helped them to get the most of it.

Creating animated sprites is in fact "easy" again if you play with the tool and experiment. It's not intuitive compared to modern applications but it is from the 2000 era and the tool was never evolved beyond a 'developer' state with lots of broken/unfinished bits.

I must have created in the last 4 months 20 animated visuals, 80 static graphics that 'fit' the game and even, using pixel art, created totally unique (not recolored) weapons. I even spent a serious amount of time (200 hours maybe) developing Hwan - https://opensoma.freeforums.net/thread/6/wip-hwan-v1-35 - for an idea of what can be done. And I know of at least 3 people that have made similar amount of "content". And each time we passed milestones we talked about the idea of giving the content to this server and each time the resounding answer was "the new content wouldn't get used properly" if at all and previous opportunities we gave this server were either ignored or forgotten. More importantly, we have GM's that are doing this for their own satisfaction / glory and not that of the community. This server has never felt 'for us' or even to champion esoma and better it. Doesn't it seem ridiculous that they have just sat on this server and yet they have replaced the EVT (quest/NPC system) but never took advantage of the new one, encrypted the main executable and made some UI/button enhancements. Talk about a waste of a opportunity and not have a vision in the first place.

The point I'm making is, the game and its community is a result of the GM's. The game 'can' be PvE friendlyv(and balance) and have lots of visual content, new spells, and if the drive is big enough a new character / monster animations but instead the game is maintained insofar as a "cheap thrills cod server". Not the game we all grew up with.

And to answer you specifically about the mage/warr thing, you need to spell it out to GM's and get someone shouting the same tune as you, to get a change made. The GM's put no time into understanding their game (at least anymore) and its mostly done with minimal effort. This is a server and game that the GM's have long not loved.

I don't even know if its morally "correct" to have a donation store anymore.

All that we are left with is the binary choice of playing the game or not... frustratingly, oh and "git gud".

there are challenges or problems with builds atm as described above..
1. if a warrior decides to 'get some int' .. his stats as a warrior are diminished massively.. makes him an open target to other ' true warriors' .. and what little bit of extra int he may have.. will still make him a sitting duck to a proper mage.

2. mages may have some op ma attack... and with 5th axe makes them formidable for pvp.. however.. with 100-120 dex even.. the hell trolls are pretty tough, needing some serious dex/ accuracy gear.... to gain their pretty decent str which is comparable with many warriors... a reason warriors aren't happy...
however.. assuming the new mele mobs are gona need some pretty decent dex to kill/ farm them.. mages with 100 or not much more dex ..are gona . or should find them tough ...

So the challenge for game balance is ..

allow mages to gain some decent dex..... which atm isn't really possible..and

allow warriors to gain some decent int.. without affecting their ''warrior'' gains too much...

5 more levels with similar to what wev'e had gains won't really address this problem..as warriors gona go the dex/ str route..and mages the int/ str route...exacerbating the problems atm

Maybe more stats for less % than we have currently to allow a bit of catching up for all builds..
or 10 new levels.. maybe with similar percentage reductions.. allowing some catch up..

dunno.. but some serious hard work for gm's to balance out...

@fox ..and other contributors .. i feel ur pain...u obviously tried hard and put lots of hours in..wd :) you aint sitting on the fence!
In fairness.. Finito been around for serious hours the last few months.. the game is only a 'side project' for the gm's... this isnt a Ubisoft/ EA/ game .. whatever.. its 2 guys doing it in their spare time.

Maybe we get some nice new stuff in the update.. and i think ppl should wait and see before getting too critical.

ps.. whatever build.. no matter how good ur stats or how good ur gear is.. if ur attacked by 2-3-4-5 ur still fukd ...so .. so dunno.. just added that .. a bit of balance thro extra levels.. stats gain changes would be helpful tho x

This is a 10/10 analysis.

Undeniable that a lot of time and effort has gone into this server over the years and it is understandable that GMs don't want to release their work but if they truly loved the game for its own sake then they would either open it up to genuinely allow more people to contribute to development and/or just release server files so that many independent servers could be developed and let free market competition work its course.

The Myth of Soma was never a PvP game it just has elements of PvP.....

Gvw, wotw, guild wars now ss, ctf been added on top of that you now have 2 hsoma gv wars and 2 dsoma gv wars each week.

This server is more PvP oriented add into the equation of the players brought up on PvP is why Soma on here is where it’s at.

But for ever player that only plays this server for PvP there are equally if not more PvE players here. I’ve said before that the PvE players could and would still play Soma if there wasn’t any PvP players logging on, but you PvP players granted a small minority that do go after the PvE players need them PvE players more than they need/want you.

Always a great read from you Mr Fox, I know you asked me about getting involved in the map editor thing and I turned it down mostly due to not having the time to invest in the project I wish I had more time I would have enjoyed create new maps etc but I also knew that whatever was created there wasn’t 100% certainty of anything ever getting ingame which if I’m honest was my main reason not being able to make enough time on the great project of learning and creating etc

At the moment Soma to me lacks direction it’s more sticky plaster here and there and it’s heartbreaking to be saying it. With each new cap rise/mini cap rise it creates imbalance, sways from one build to another. There’s enough threads to see the majority of concerns from the 5th axe stone, to the procs being OP etc no testing, no thought it’s chaos in a game.

Find the balance, for everything and Soma will thrive as it should.

Spot on. The GMs have done great with this server but now it has become tedious. Increase level cap every year or so, add a few recoloured mobs, armour and weaps to keep people playing with bare minimum effort put in, in my opinion to keep donations rolling in.

I am fully aware the GMs are limited for time therefore limiting the editing they can do to the server. As much as it is appreciated the GMs maintain a consistent userbase for the game and allow us to play a game with love, I feel they do it not for their love for the game but in fact their love for donations.

It is said donations go back into the server when it is evident the donations go in the GM's back pockets. Not that I have an issue with that, would just prefer they were honest with everyone. If the money was going back into the server I'd imagine we'd have such things as new character models allowing GMs to build brand new armour etc. Taking an educated guess I'd say 10s of 1000s of £ have been put into donations.

Likewise Fox, I too know a few people (myself included) who maintain full time jobs who also continue to build on Soma. Creating completely new maps/weps/monesters/spells. Its a shame its so difficult to liaise with GMs, being such a small community we need all the help we can get making Soma as great as it can be.

Idea's and suggestions are frequently ignored. New edits to the game aren't tested prior to full release and when these edits don't work to plan and actually ruin a certain aspect of the game they aren't reverted. I'm not sure if this is down to GMs not entirely understanding what's going on due to them not actually playing the game or if its down to ego, not wanting to remove something they took time to implement.

Again I'm aware GMs are limited to time they can put into development but cheating is rife. Pot macros and botting for example go unpunished even with sufficient video evidence. Pre coded files for these issues have been sent to GMs by a certain player preventing these things from occurring but they're still ignored. The cheats go unpunished and worst of all they continue to do it.

Its clear more assistance is needed to run this server but the GMs have to allow it.

Its clear more assistance is needed to run this server but the GMs have to allow it.[/quote]
+1 to the big thread of quotes above.

The GM hasn't introduced any immunity option or potion etc, I think the hesitance to do it is because maybe some higher level players will leave, either way what you are saying is something that happens in Soma that gamers don't post about it they just leave, it's a shame really, you can see the higher level players have an erection for the 2 kill thing and actually count the minutes to get the next 2 lol, can you imagine a new player logging in to enjoy that? :-/

I think the effort mages put in they deserve some over powering techniques though!

Seeing Fox's work on Hwan and his other couple of maps got me thinking about an editor I was working on but shelved a few months ago.

It features a custom, fairly performant rendering engine for drawing the whole map with it's details on screen allowing full zooming etc. I was _very_ close to just re-working the game entirely, it's completely feasible, but it's just like Finito, Sylver, Fox etc. ya know, work takes up most of my time :P

I don't want people to think the game has lost it's touch on people, I for one think it's great, and coming back to this server is what inspired me to pick it up in the first place. Granted, this doesn't really bring anything to the table, but people are out there and willing to do this stuff, I doubt I'm the only one.

Anyway, for anyone interested, a very brief limited demo: https://youtu.be/Vz3E_rrgcFI

Very nice Heatzinc. You have captured the workings of layers and movement tiles. How much more functionality did you add? I have a discord server if you want to join and chat at all ^^ PM me.
