A possible fix for the broken economy

Author Content Date
Hey guys, so as well all know the economy in soma has been broken for some time, the currency of the game barr, is borderline worthless, without a healthy economy we cant expect the same game.

A few of us have been discussing the problem for some time now and we think we have come up with the solution.

In the real-world currencies are backed by gold, or so they are meant to be. This gives them real intrinsic value, in soma they are backed by tps, mats and warps. This makes barr pretty much useless as a currency, as "a medium of exchange." When you are trying to trade an item for the game currency for example, you are basically saying sell me your small diamond for 4 million barr, or sell me your diamond for 4000 town warps... Who needs 5000 town warps?

This is exceptionally hard on us crafters. As a crafter our role is meant to facilitate the economy, but we spend our time with no tradable resource. This is all but true apart from SRs, that sometimes we can sell for a herb or something basic. Many crafters now are choosing to just "burn" their crafted items by choosing not to sell them back to the shop as the game currency is so worthless.

The idea, and I think it was mentioned on discord recently. Let barr be exchangeable for scrolls of valour, and effectively perfectly backed by scrolls of valour as they are not tradable.

Then when i am trying to buy a diamond for 4 million barr for example, people are going to say... 4million bar = X scrolls of valour, not 4000 town warps.

Even if the price was only 1million barr for one 1 scroll of valour, It would give value security to the person accepting the barr. And just so its clear that would mean 350 million barr for a peice of epic champion armour, or 1.4 billion a whole set....which is crazy.

Additionally, assuming 50/50 rates on upgrade success for 3-8, you would need 89.6 billion barr to make a 4 pieces +8 set at even odds, not including the upgradable items.

What also could be stroke of genius and make things a bit more interesting we could reive the scissor, paper, rock feature to add the risk that you end up with nothing. But perhaps reducing the cost to 500k from 1 million.

The price of this can go up and down depending on how much barr is in the system and be used to stabilise the currency.

I was asked to post the above which I’m happy to do for the group of players that are making this suggestion.

Look forward to the community’s thoughts from players and GM’s.

thats a sound idea and implementation. altho probably 500k per 1 valour would be a little more feasible.

in effect. this would mean buying ur new stuff for barr ( valour)
2 ways to make barr.. craft a lot, which might put a strain on mat supplies...
or hunt mags.. which might put a strain on 'mag supplies'

In theory, sounds a good way to top up valour which is currently in low supply to say the least.

And certainly, would make barr a commodity worth having.

I like the rock paper scissors idea. Burn barr with a chance of a scroll.
