Punching gives you the same stats as a swordie but you get int gains on top. Punch from level 1 to 100 np.

If you don't want to gimp your dex too much, you could level normally till about 130 str then punch the rest of the way.

Whenever you want is a good time.. knux really doesn't need punch lvls tbh unless you're looking for a high int and higher str it all depends on what build you want... if you want your lvling to be 100x slower take the punching route ;p if you want to get high lvl fast hunt as normal with a few punch lvls added in you'll sacrifice int and a little bit of str but you'll have a fair bit more dex.

Aside from just generally getting some magic defence for fighting humans, the only real reason you need to punch is to be comfortable hunting WBM which is probably around 90-95 int, so any time before you're due to hunt them is good really. It's up to you when to do it, but a popular time for axe is at the 95 str slowdown, so maybe at 95 dex for knuckle?

Having punched a fair bit throughout the levels, I would recommend just getting it all out of the way in one go as late as possible if you can stomach it, but i know that is a tall order for most people. Early punch levels got me around +10 int a pop, but later the gains diminish as you'd expect with stat slow downs. For example, I punched 100% of lvl 80 and got 5.0 int, which was over 90 int to start with.
