Greatly depends on your cash flow.

Without money, i'll suggest:

As soon as you have Flamebolt (req. level 3 and 200barr):

Tillek
start - 25int

Infernal Mantis
25int - 30int

Necronis
30int - 40int

Hellion
40int - 52 int

HWAN Cyclope or Darian Shaman
52int - 65int (You can stay at Darian Shaman until 75int)

CONTI Cyclope or Elite Gargoyle Fighter
65int - 90int

Kharil Lizards or Gargoyle Shaman
90int - 120int

Drazil Druids
120-135int

Fallen Trolls
135int - level cap

At any point you can punch, this will sacrifice int in favour of str/dex.

If you have access to money (I mean ALOT of barr) then there is an alternate 'route' whereby you can skip a lot of the aforementioned monsters.

Well, you'll be making purchases like:

Mind Aid (necklace with +5int)
Probably grab one for 1,000,000 or 2,000,000 (depending on if you can even find a seller).

Crystal Arrow-X (200,000)
Explosion-X (500,000)
Firestorm-X (1,000,000)

The above will make your leveling time incredibly fast by comparison allowing you to do 'unconventional leveling' such as:

At 28int until 65int hunting Altered Beasts in Continental Army map.

Doing this, you'll lose massive amount of money each hunt (region of 10k and you'll continue to hemorrhage money in increments as you get higher level, until you reach EGF at 65int, even then you'll only break even at around 70/75int) so without constant funding, you're not advised to take this route.

I mean at like 40 int would there be any difference in gains / leveling time at hwan abs rather than conti?

Since hwan abs have 68 int and conti has 98

Since you're far off from their INT I think you will be fine at Hwan AB's - conti ones will take too little damage I suspect.

I've just started a devil mage but can only get the healing spell it seems. Do I have to heal others like in HSoma to raise my INT initially?

Whack with your staff (or punch) until level 3.

Then go to mage trainer and learn Flame Bolt (200barr required).
