Hi all,
I've been pondering what soma means to some of our players and how it fits into their perhaps busy lives. If you've got time I'd love to know: - How did you hear about soma? - What does it mean to you? - Where does it fit in your life? - Any ways soma has helped you? - Any great stories you've had in regards to soma? Thanks! Dan PS. I'll see if I can sort prizes out for some of the responses.

I first heard of Myth of Soma back when it was in beta about 16 years ago, my father used to play it when he got back from work, and i used to sit beside him and watch him play , i was about 10 years old at that time. So playing Soma now brings back memories of my father when he was still alive :) i use the same character name as he had back then. So in some way, he is still here with me

I actually saw it on Game Network back in the day and instantly set about downloading the client on 56k dial up ;D. - What does it mean to you? I see the Soma community as a group of friends I grew up with, like having a friendship with hundreds of penpals, only in-game and over nigh on two decades! I see the game itself as a way to unwind, have fun and speak to said friends. - Where does it fit in your life? Soma occupies a smaller slice of my time now than it did when I was 15 due to the boring realities of everyday life as we all get older, but I always make time for Soma because it is what I enjoy doing with my spare time. - Any ways soma has helped you? I was quite the antisocial hermit as a teenager and Soma became a way for me to socialise in a way and to speak to others, I actually met a past girlfriend on e soma, whom I was in a relationship with for two years, so yeah, thanks Soma, good times! - Any great stories you've had in regards to soma? The entire community is like one big comic strip storyline, logging on any given day can lead to some funny moments!

Personally I got into Soma on the back of frequently having panic attacks/anxiety attacks and needed something to ground me. This was in 2003 ish. Back then mental health problems were not really supported and the best help you got was usually anti depressants. The grind, or as I like to refer it, shaping a character, gave me the focus I needed on something to make life more bearable for a awhile.
That said, I made some friends, those that I have stayed in touch with since those times. I suppose I game back to this version of Soma to finish of what I never did. I was frequently poor in Esoma, had broken my hero boots because I couldn't afford SRs, unknowing to how critical hero boots were and lost my account through my own stupidy. Anyway. I first heard of soma on the Game Network tv channel. Nostalgically a lot and its great to have had the chance to talk to people that I never really did in Esoma. So I see it as a conduit to a once legendary community! And thankfully, legends remain here and are not exclusive to being level capped. I play Soma when I can, in between running a house, going to work and my own private life. As above really, I think Soma offered me a base at a difficult point for me on a very personal level. :)

I remember as a kid me and my brother watched Game Network TV show and KillerKat i think? being at Apus and my brother really wanted to play it, so he persuaded our dad to buy him a PC and as i saw him playing i really wanted too, so after about a year or two of tedious begging to dad he finally caved in, i got my PC and then i'm pretty sure not long after the whole esoma came to an end and i never got to play :( Except for maybe an hour or so whilst my brother was asleep at like 1am ! - What does it mean to you? Soma means quite a lot to me, not only for being a nostalgic game i never really got to play and always wanted too, but to escape my troubles of my personal life - (depression & anxiety ) I Won't delve too deep but soma is a big factor to be able to relax and de-stress and to keep my mind occupied. - Where does it fit in your life? Fiancee,Family,Soma - Any ways soma has helped you? Yes many times, to de-stress and forget about the real world.

Soma was a massive part of my life as a 15/16 year old, I spent my pocket money and then my first ever wage on soma using a splash plastic card, £6.50 a month with the first 10 hours free I think it was, I never made to a high level on esoma sadly as my mum never paid the phone bill so was disconnected every month, I used to have to get my mate to download the patches as we had to unplug the internet from the phone line as we could only use it after 6pm weekdays and all day weekends.

- HOW DID YOU HEAR ABOUT SOMA?
Just Finished High school and my Dad bought Sky tv ( I moaned at him for over a year because I wanted to watch the WWF(now WWE) on sky sports and I came across this channel called Games Network as I was watching WWE on sky one during the Break... I never actually saw any Myth of Soma footage Only the Legend of Mir... really enjoyed the idea of a online game never heard of them until that point... So Being on Dial Up I went to download Mir and it literally took me 3 days over 70hours to download the client since BB didn't exist or was expensive... once I downloaded it I went to install it but the damn client Currupted and wouldn't work... I thought screw that game and carried on watching it for a few weeks... Tried again but this time I had seen Myth of Soma... So I downloaded them both... Again Mir failed.. but Soma installed.. and I made a account and played the free trail... I made a char called Ramirez but the deleted the char cuz I didn't like the name lol... then I created KORTEZ and started playing the char - WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO YOU? For me As a child and well into my Teens/early-mid 20s it was my life. due to A lot of Mental health issues regarding Self image self esteem, motivation ,No confidence at all and a personality that hated change and a thing called "Self Sabotage Syndrome".... Soma was my Drug of choice because I Didn't have to put in effort or a real care about anyone other than myself... (This sounds bad so far but carry on reading) I had serious issues where I couldn't talk to people unless it was through some sort of chat system I become a recluse in my bedroom and Soma was my only way out of the life I chose... I wasn't Social IRL but imo Soma was my social life... there was people I spoke to and lvld with Daily and there was those who just tried to make my experience an unpleasant one.. Shout out to Pete (some people cant and wont ever grow up very unfortunate) to me the Game was a way out of my issues when I was young and I enjoyed the whole slow experience.. there is still no game out there modern that has the same levelling system as Soma from what ive seen the only game that came close was RF online which like soma still has a small dedicated player base on the Pserver scene. - WHERE DOES IT FIT INTO YOUR LIFE? As stated above I played The game for about 10 years which took over my life I met some really good people whom im still in contact with to this day but others I lost contact with like (Dave - Original Sabretooth from esoma and DANE one of the AKIN players) I met people and developed amazing friendships with NATHAM aka Takeshi (brother if you read this I love you No homo) he knows what he did :) Presti Chojine JR Mason Richard Mandragon Akin GEUS/SETT (NN IDIOT) hahahaha to many names to mention Unfortunatly because of the way I was back then I lied about myself ALOT and made up Catfish style stories and its something I fed on for attention and to basically just feel wanted and be apart of a group... something I never had in school due to extreme bullying I made up a story that I was a millionaires kid and was rich (when in reality I was a 26stone depressed individual that was on ESA and had no interest in getting a job or having a real life) But After a really bad 2011 A lot of things changed in my life for the better (Attempted Suicide that fortunately for me was a failed attempt) I was Sick of my life and it was nothing to do with soma.. in fact at that point Soma was the only good thing in my life due to the Self Sabotage syndrome and other mental issues I was going through I decided on 31st of December 2011 that I needed to change my life if I wanted to be truly happy and I made the hardest decision in my life and that was Leave Soma and Self improve and ultimately get the girl and Settle down The one and only thing I ever wanted was to be loved and carry on my family legacy by having a family of my own  26stone down to 13stone back upto 16.7stone in the picture (Left 26stone middle 19stone right 16.7stone) originally I wanted to just lose weight and I lost a total of 13stone in my 1st year training but after losing the weight I looked like FAT BASTARD from the Austin powers movie After the weightloss and I was grossed out about the loose skin So I started to lift weights.. and 2 1/2 years later of pure dedication and desire to succeed the far right picture was the result :) I filled out all the skin apart from a small part on my stomach that unfortunately requires Cosmetic Surgery but Proudly let it hang as a reminder of what I never want to be again..... As you can see... I made some changes and Said goodbye to the old me but in doing so I lost contact with EVERY friend I made on soma until recently when TAKESHI reached out and contacted me after I came back to get game after randomly coming across some of Mattys SOMA LEGENDS videos.... . ANY WAYS SOMA HAS HELPED YOU? But After a really bad 2011 A lot of things changed in my life for the better (Attempted Suicide that fortunately for me was a failed attempt) I was Sick of my life and it was nothing to do with soma.. in fact at that point Soma was the only good thing in my life due to the Self Sabotage syndrome and other mental issues I was going through
I decided on 31st of December 2011 that I needed to change my life if I wanted to be truly happy and I made the hardest decision in my life and that was Leave Soma and Self improve and ultimately get the girl and Settle down The one and only thing I ever wanted was to be loved and carry on my family legacy by having a family of my own

Been playing since the game came out on Bata .No fancy stories i just like playing .Good way to relax after a day of hanging drywall . Quite possibly might be the oldest player on here lol.Never gonna stop Gaming ..Cheers :)

originally I wanted to just lose weight and I lost a total of 13stone in my 1st year training but after losing the weight I looked like FAT BASTARD from the Austin powers movie After the weightloss and I was grossed out about the loose skin So I started to lift weights.. and 2 1/2 years later of pure dedication and desire to succeed the far right picture was the result :) I filled out all the skin apart from a small part on my stomach that unfortunately requires Cosmetic Surgery but Proudly let it hang as a reminder of what I never want to be again.....
As you can see... I made some changes and Said goodbye to the old me but in doing so I lost contact with EVERY friend I made on soma until recently when TAKESHI reached out and contacted me after I came back to get game after randomly coming across some of Mattys SOMA LEGENDS videos....

I achieved my Life goal in 3 1/2 years by using a tactic that all players of soma use on a daily basis
CONSISTANCY doing something repetitive on a daily basis until you reach your goal....
my goal was get healthy, get the girl. carry on my family legacy (settling down and having children)and make my parents proud for once and the commitment I had to soma I switched to health and Well u can all see what it did.

Don't have many stories that are FAMILY FRIENDLY to tell but I won an Event on Esoma
Where it was Guess the Monster and the GM basically shouted the name of a mob IE WARMESS but typed it like RAESMSW and the first person to pm with the correct guess won a GM shout and it could say anything
So I proceeded to verbally abuse Sabretooth through a GM by calling him a FAT BALDING SMELLY PIGEON WITH A WADDLE and the Gm actually did it LOL... my screen filled up with pms from both HSOMA and DSOMA players saying LOL and ***
Ohh and one time Soma made me super Paranoid when I was playing a 500x rhys server I was under the influence of ALOT of mary jane(weed) n I was hunting Skellington Warriors.... Got super paranoid because I was Certain the skellies were calling me ERIC over and over ROFL,,,,,,

I think a lot of what I experienced is echoed in other people's comments but here it is:
- How did you hear about soma? I used to watch Game Network like many people here back in the days of yore in 2002 it might have been? I was in year 9 and my dad had just got us 512kb broadband so I could download at 60kb/sec meaning Soma took a couple of hours. I remember the first day I played still now sat in my parent's study on the computer killing wolves with an axe and got to level 8 or 9. I was hooked from then until probably 2004 and from then I played private servers on and off for a while and then had a long hiatus until playing this maybe a year ago. - What does it mean to you? I see Soma in both positive and negative lights. Soma was my escape as a kid, and to a point it still is. I was an awkward child who did very well at school but didn't feel I fit in anywhere. I went to a bad school and wasn't really being challenged in any facet of my life so I pored everything into Soma as it was somewhere I felt that I belonged. I often stayed up until 5am to gain stats/skills and I stopped going to school. Retrospectively it was stupid and definitely put me back in my life but at the end of the day I don't know whether I would have achieved anything more or less had I not began playing Soma so I don't necessarily regret or resent it. - Where does it fit in your life? I recently moved to the US and for me Soma is a link back to my old life and also an escape from an environment that is hyper-social. The way I explained it to someone is that for some people meditation is clearing their mind etc, for me it's playing computer games and one of those is Soma. It's definitely a part of my life that is relatively closed off from anything else, I don't know anyone personally who has played or heard of the game and most of my social group would probably be surprised if they knew how much time I poured into a game. I prefer to keep it that way however as it's my "me" time. - Any ways soma has helped you? Mostly the above. - Any great stories you've had in regards to soma? Most nights when i'm exhausted and I have to face the prospect of watching the misses' t.v eek - Any ways soma has helped you? Now this is the dramatic part so yeah lmao kinda sad. When I was in Primary school ( about age 7?) My mum was in a very violent relationship with my father whom attacked her on numerous occasions and basically frightened her half to death and it resulted in a divorce which then sent my mum into a major depression where words in our house were scarce, She found soma through a friend and got seriously addicted to the point where us kids were cooking for ourselves (I know this seems like bad light for soma, but without it I fear things could have been worse), anyway me and an older bro went to the carboot and bought 2 Pc's with our lifes savings basically lol and installed soma to "Effectively" socialize with our mum, It brought us closer and in a way saved a doomed relationship when she came out the other side! - Any great stories you've had in regards to soma? Everyday is great I enjoy Mistress guild and the conversations we have most days regarding politics, conflicts and everyday stuff... seems boring but trust me it's funny as hell.
