Dsoma Spear... Viable?

Author Content Date
This popped up at a nice time for me. I just want to ask, is sword is dsoma in that much of a bad state? I've only been playing dsoma for a week or two, wanted to try something different than bowing my life away on hsoma lol.

I decided to go sword for the sheer heck of it, as it's not a weapon I've used much of. Now I'm only around level 60 or so, so not very high at all, so I'm wondering if it's that bad, would I be better off switching to my super low level axe character and leveling that instead? (although bow is super popular, axe & sword are the only weapons I wanted to pick between lol).

I have enjoyed sword so far, but if it's going to be really weak at higher levels, I'd rather know that now and switch while I'm still low, instead of getting to level 100 or so before realizing this lol.

Thanks

Dsoma doesn't have much sword users, I wont pretend to be an expert but if you want to hit hard and be balanced in terms of dex and str then it is a good choice.

People will always moan/complain about their class but aside from all this mental mage procs, dsoma is pretty balanced. Yes sword, spear and axe will struggle to have a good pvp fight with a mage or archer(1v1/2v2ish) with all the range advantage + feather spam but you probably already considered this as its similar to hsoma.

Soma lacks a way to slow down your opponent to a point where they cant feather/tp or run for 5seconds or so in order to fight those who just hit and run but thats something that has been brought up a million times and been ignored.

Sword is good for wotw, gvw and in a group pvp (if you have an axer or target do not run as much).

Keep at it and play the class you enjoy

Dsoma sword may be the middle child in terms of stats, but it’s FAR from balanced and here’s why:

If you understand hit-rate you’ll understand that the 5 dex sword has on spear and the 10 on axe (at cap, well 110 I think but I know 120 is if not the same gaps then it worsens for sword, this kinda of dex counts for borderline nothing and vs knux (+9 dex on capped sword) or bow (+18 dex on capped sword) plus these classes often go dex and as sword has had its str nerfed to hell and back, even when we hit them (8 or so % of the time) it doesn’t hurt enough to matter unless you want to be a pure assist man (would’ve probably made axe instead of the old wrecking class that WAS sword.

The stats lost on giving us 5/10 extra dex on the less dexy classes, then the slight bit more wis than both leaves sword lacking strength pretty badly, and con considering 80% of arrows fired by an archer hit us and knux probs the same.

Now you just miss constantly, have no defensive aura, can’t use a shield really due to poor attack as it is, and if you go dex you’ll hit like a gnat.

Sword wis is lacking without a doubt, considering how sword generally had on the high end of int before the nerf/110+ patch.

Long story short, don’t listen to anyone telling you sword is even average if you want to be a decent player. If you wanna just run into range 1, miss, 5th and miss, get stoned and die, or be one banged by a mage from range etc then roll sword. Dsoma sword is horrendous and that’s why there are none about anymore, trust me I used to love it.

Sorry my bad I also left the evasion aura’s out of the equation above, which play huge roles when adding to the capped hit/eva rate both classes will have on sword with mediocre dex bits.

From an axe point of view, they used to be full tanks, now they can be but have to be heavily geared
I think dsoma is now to the point where it is so gear dependant, if you want to tank a bit you're full defense with shield 1h and pd, lowering your attack a lot (how I use it but axe being a tank shouldnt be able to go wreck people at the same time)
Other option is full attack mode, good 2h, full acc set, never had the privilege of trialling it with full set, juddbebb/hadou has one so youd be better asking his opinion on that side, but it does make you somewhat squishier

What I will say is as a capped mage I can happily let axe stone me and never fear dying 1v1 as damage can be outpotted, sword with attack set is a different matter because of huge 5th damage
The other 'advantage' to axe if you can call it that is archers generally go DeX set, but their dex is already capped vs axe so it kind of nullifies their heavily upgraded gear

In a nutshell range always wins out because everyone across the board deals out too much damage, much like hsoma because of the silly wep speeds, only thing saving that is every player can also get 5th axe

This is why I’ve suggested adding things like 3% stone proc to dsoma close range Nega weapons, not only would it make up for the majority of weapons being pretty poor attack wise with the nerf to use taken into consideration (only spear I know of has actual decent attack roll’s compared to previous top tier weapons) but it’d help counter some of the range being so OP problems.

Put a cool down on feathers
The issue with stone proc is it would very rarely proc on the range chars (the ones you want it to work on) due to them not staying close enough to be hit in the first place

-1 cool down on feathers, people could still just run, it’d only really benefit ranged classes.

To Fulgrim - I am a capped d soma sword and I agree with everything that Dr_Evil has said.

If you are rerolling and don't want archer or mage pick axe to be useful in PvP.

You could try and make a +5 pod set and run with a pack and dip in and 5th people which will hit big and finish off most people if you proc.

I fought Afro a couple of days ago with mediocre pod and str gear (like +2/+1 pod and non upped otm + non-tag crit ear) and when I managed to hit him the damage 5th did took like 2/3 of his health with a 1h so being an assist with a big 5th is a viable strategy. Probably worth mentioning though that he also 1 hit + 2nd spear killed me although that was with heavy con nerf for wis.

I think that d soma could theoretically be a lot more balanced if more people could gear their classes for e.g. if a swordie could make a decent accu/pod set paired with high attack access then it would be lethal but the economy is just SO bad it really is the equivalent of the great depression of the 1930s.

If d soma is coming back in any real way then the next patch the drops have to be seriously addressed upping across the board and adding med rubies to tark knights, devil deity and mags. Invul also needs to drop from tarks and dd.

As I said earlier in the thread if the idea is that the d soma economy needs to be depressed to avoid OP dev gear in RvR then just fix it via the % system so that both d soma PvP and RvR can coexist.

As always range is an issue and if you don't have an axer with you PvP is essentially pointless for non-ranged classes anyway. Bring in some variant of ctf slow for each range 1 class imo. Much more important in d soma as we can't all get 5th axe and switch out to bow/magic at any time as in hsoma.

The issue with slow is the fact that most groups always have ranged chars in them so it puts more range 1 chars at a bigger disadvantage

Because you can be hit by archers/mages whilst slowed and you’re less likely to get near them to slow them in the first place I presume you mean?

If so under my vision say spears version would be a spell type aura that slows from range 4 ‘spear toss’ or the like.

Knuckle should have ‘dash’ where you range 4 slow and the aura jets you toward the other character like a whelp.

Sword can just have a range 1 version as a support.

Axe is obviously already set.

Range and specifically needing an axe user at least in d soma where class is set is a huge issue imo.

I agree the problems would be lessened if gearing wasn’t so ridiculously hard on Dsoma, I also believe Dsoma being busy is good for the server as a whole - bigger WOTW’s which IMO is the most fun part of Soma.

Dsoma definitely needs some stat adjustments, nega weapon adjustments and massive drop increases if we’re ever gonna see it truly busy again.

Yes that's what I meant salem 🙂 if there is a group of say a spear and 3 range chars, once spear lands a proc the archers/mages are sitting pretty at range with zero chance of being hit and all equipped with zombie pants
