at the end of the day, if gms turned around tomorrow and said we've had enough and servers over, everyone
would jump at the chance for a subscription to keep it going. its not to keep the gms motivated, cos they do a darn good job atm, its for them to actually benefit from all the shit they have to deal with, and in the process we all benefit from a game we love.

I'd happily pay a subscription.
Edit: But like another user pointed out, this may bring in some legal issues (assuming they turnover a certain amount of revenue) which may just add to their work. |

The only thing that's kept me from paying thus far, is I feel the game (the part I play) is incomplete and far too unbalanced to deem "a finished/complete product".
That aside, would a subscription be per account? |

The tax implications alone would make it not worth it for Fin/Dan IMO.
Also what about copyright issues? |

"ARRIS"Not to be a negative Nelly, but I guess I will THIS. If it was a pay-to-play service, people would expect more than they will get (even if they were getting more than they need). GMs would be forced to put in more hours than they have, add content that isn't needed, close down the server, or have an unhappy client base. I believe this is why it is done on a strictly donation basis rather than pay-to-play. Also meleneck has a point about tax, further "income" would probably result in more tax than the payments covered. Although I think copyrights etc have run out, hence the official release, correct me if I'm wrong.

"FLICKTHEBEAN" RE: The tax implications - how would the income result in more tax than the payments covered? Unless I've misunderstood what you're saying, that's impossible as they'd only pay a % of the profit depending on what tax bracket they were in. I'd happily pay a subscription. GM's will say no as they always do when the subject of monetizing the game comes up, but at least this shows most people appreciate the work they do, and are grateful.

"SATAN2""FLICKTHEBEAN" Obviously the tax burden wouldn't be more than was coming in but you also have to consider other costs and the general stress of turning this server into a business with a revenue stream, such as becoming VAT registered (no idea if subscriptions would actually require this), keeping accounts and filing their taxes. Probably have to hire an accountant unless Fin/Dan have some experience in this field. Also on a more personal level for Fin/Dan they'd have to look into what the extra income would do to their own tax rate etc. I'm sure Fin/Dan would of already tried to turn the server into a business if that's what they wanted, at the moment it seems they're quite happy to run it as a hobby and I think that's how it should stay, so much less stress than turning it into a full time job with all the implications that has. It really isn't as simple as just adding a subscription button to the website.

I agree there are more things to consider than simply adding a 'subscribe' button to the website, but the tax implications aren't onerous. Wouldn't need to be VAT registered as I doubt the income would come to anywhere near the threshold, everything else, keeping a record of all incomings and outgoings wouldn't be difficult. I'd be happy to help for free (I'm an accountant).

Throwing money at it will not solve the problem, isylver has already said that he's not interested in the money I'm thinking if people stopped abusing certain aspects of the game it would be enough payment for them, it sounds cheesy but I believe its as simple as that

Nothing stopping everyone in this thread saying they'd subscribe from just donating £5 a month if that's what they want to do tbh, no need to make the server pay to play.
